Closeup of Nathan Hale statue in front of the Wadsworth Athenaeum, Main Street, Hartford (Conn.). Photograph has been treated to enhance contrast. Designed by Enoch Woods Smith for a competition held in the 1880's by the State of Connecticut for a statue to be placed in the state capitol building. James J. Goodwin commissioned the statue and, when it was not chosen as the winning entry, gifted it to the Wadsworth Athenaeum in 1892. The statue was positioned on a pedestal in front of the museum in 1893. Nathan Hale was named the official State Hero of Connecticut in 1985 by an act of the Connecticut General Assembly.
