Title supplied by cataloger. Joseph Warren Holmes was born in Mystic. In his more than fifty-year career of commanding clipper ships and others, he claimed never to have lost a single vessel or man. He sailed around Cape Horn 84 times and the Cape of Good Hope fourteen times, possibly a record. Vessels commanded by Holmes include the bark Frances and ships Elisabeth F. Willets, Haze and Seminole, all Mystic-built. Portrait is described as "made by himself." In inlaid frame.
