Residence of Nelson Hollister (Barnabas Deane house), 73 Grove Street, Hartford
Gambrel-roofed frame house with louvered shutters and a central bay with a pediment. A porch with scroll-sawn brackets and a bay window at the right were probably added later. A leafless tree at the left appears to be a fruit tree. A leafless bush at the right appears to be a flowering shrub. A grassy lawn is in the foreground. Inscribed on back: "The residence of Nelson Hollister (1893) on Grove Street, / south side, just above Front Street. His predecessor was / Daniel Buck, Merchat [sic], and the house was built more than / a hundred years ago by Barnabas Deane our U.S. Minister to / the French Court. The present occupant says it was built in 1776." Newspaper clipping on the back documents the sale of the house to Long Brothers on October 12, 1897.
